Electrical work

Home EV charging circuits are a continuous high-current load on a residential electrical service. Conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, grounding, bonding and terminations are governed by the National Electrical Code as adopted and amended in your jurisdiction. Requirements differ between jurisdictions and between code adoption cycles, and a statement that is accurate in one place may not be accurate in another.

Calculators and charts

The calculators on this site apply published formulas and the charts reproduce published tables. They cannot account for the conditions of a specific installation, including existing loads on the service, panel bus rating, terminal temperature ratings, ambient temperature, the number of current-carrying conductors sharing a raceway, derating factors, or local amendments to the code. Any of those can change a correct answer by a conductor size or more.

Results are a first look at whether a project is plausible and a way to sanity-check a quote. They are not a load calculation, not a conductor specification and not certification. A licensed electrician must perform the actual calculations for your installation.

Product information

We do not perform hands-on product testing, we do not operate a laboratory, and we never claim to. Product information here is researched from manufacturer documentation, listed safety certifications, published specifications and verified owner reviews. Specifications, availability, certifications and firmware behaviour can change without notice, and a product's current listing is always more authoritative than our description of it.

Prices shown were accurate when researched and change constantly. The price shown by the retailer at checkout is the one that applies. Build totals are the sum of researched line items and are planning figures rather than quotes.

Vehicle information

Battery capacities, onboard AC charger ratings, ranges, efficiency figures and connector types come from published manufacturer specifications and EPA ratings. All of them vary by trim, model year, options, wheel choice and software version, and usable capacity is always smaller than gross capacity. Confirm your own vehicle's specifications against its window sticker or owner's manual before anybody sizes a circuit around a figure from this site.

Cost estimates

Installation cost ranges are assembled from published flat-rate pricing, reported homeowner quotes and published permit fee schedules. They are researched ranges rather than quotes, and they cannot account for what an electrician will find in your panel or your walls. Labour rates, permit fees and material prices vary widely by location and over time. Always obtain at least two written quotes from licensed electricians.

Electricity rates, fuel prices, charging cost figures, savings estimates and payback periods on this site are illustrative calculations based on stated assumptions. They are not financial advice and not a projection of your results. Your marginal electricity rate, including delivery charges and any tiered pricing, is what actually applies to you, and tariffs, incentives and tax credit rules change and are set locally. Consult your utility and, for tax questions, a qualified tax professional.
